Ten things to know about Wikipedia

On the pages of Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, you can find "10 things to know ", a mini-guide prepared by Wikimedia Italy to dispel some stereotypes about the encyclopedia, the association, the relationship between the two, and other news frequently reported incorrectly by the media:

1. Wikimedia Commons is NOT
The term "usage" refers to one or more groups, depending on the context, one can treat the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), the American foundation that manages several projects including Wikipedia, Wikimedia, or Italy (WMI), a cultural non-profit and corresponding Italian official WMF. It should be noted that the activities of WMI can not be considered a direct expression of WMF.

2. Italy does NOT handle Wikimedia Commons Wikimedia
Italy does not control the content of Wikipedia. Wikimedia Italy is an association of people working on projects of the Wikimedia Foundation (also on Wikipedia), but being members of the association does not confer any right or responsibility more than in the encyclopedia. For example, consider the associations such as "Friends of the Civic Museum, with the difference that the partners have no usage Italy nemmeno sconti sull'uso di Wikipedia, dato che questa è gratuita!

Si pensi ad esempio all'edizione inglese: nessuno ne parla come "Wikipedia Inghilterra" o "Wikipedia Stati Uniti"; essendo l'italiano una lingua poco diffusa al di fuori dell'Italia, viene spontaneo associated with Italy, although it is discussed elsewhere (in Canton Ticino, for example) or will be investigated by individuals interested in anywhere in the world. The term "Wikipedia Italy" also gives rise to misunderstandings: it is referred to the edition in Italian or one of the issues in regional languages \u200b\u200b(and Emilia Romagna, Friuli, Liguria, Lombardy, Naples, Piedmont, Sardinia, Sicily, tarantino, Veneto)?
* "Wikipedia Italy" can not even be used to refer to the association Wikimedia Italy, because it gathers people from all WMF projects, not just Wikipedia.

4. There is not just difficult to Wikipedia
to believe but there it is: Wikipedia is one of the nine projects that were created to date by the Foundation and embodies just one aspect of the dissemination of knowledge. Other projects include: Wiktionary (dictionary and thesaurus), Wikibooks (manuals and textbooks), Wikisource (digital library), Wikiquote (a collection of aphorisms and quotations), Wikispecies (species), Wikiversity (news source) Wikimedia Commons (archive of multimedia resources), Wikiversity (resources and educational activities).

5. Freedom does not mean that I can copy it as I please
You can use Wikipedia content in two ways: quoting small portions of the text or bringing back large parts (or all).
* In the first case, the citation should include the title of the item that the words "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia," the same way as a normal article text or paper reports the data on their sources. It is desirable that the quotation also includes the date and time of the full version you are using or, alternatively, the revision number of the voice [...]
* In the second case, when it wants to bring large parts of one or most Wikipedia articles, this is possible because all the texts of Wikipedia are licensed under the GFDL and CC-BY-SA: These licenses allow you to copy, reuse, revise and republish content, provided you meet the following conditions:
or that the final text is itself licensed under the GFDL + CC-BY-SA;
or be recognized paternity of the voice;
or is provided access the source text .[...]

6. How do I contact the editorial office of Wikipedia?
You can not. Wikipedia does not have an editorial staff.
Its operation is based on the guidelines established by the community from the users and the basic principles can not be modified, known as the "five pillars":
* Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not an indiscriminate collection of information *
Wikipedia has a neutral point of view *
Wikipedia free
* Wikipedia has a code of conduct
* Wikipedia has no fixed rules within Wikipedia
can contact individual members, in their "talk pages", unless they have enabled the function by sending them an e-mail .

7. The site of Wikipedia is NOT it.wikipedia.org and www.wikipedia.it
Although wikipedia.it is available on the entire contents of Wikipedia, the navigation is made uncomfortable by a banner ad that appears at the head of all screens . This is because a domain is wikipedia.it squat, inelegant term that indicates that someone else has taken a domain corresponding to a brand that does not appartiene, al fine di realizzare un lucro.

The only relationship between the two is the person of Jimmy Wales, founder of WMF and co-founder of Wikia. Today, Jimmy Wales, a former president of WMF, remains on the board as honorary president of WMF. The current president is Florence Devouard.
Wikimedia Foundation is supported by donations and does not carry out commercial activities. Like many other companies, WMF Wikia supports through donations. However, there is no formal link between the two organizations.
In summary Wikimedia Foundation, the organization that supports Wikipedia, is a non-profit and is based solely on donations. Does not carry out commercial activities or commercial Wikia is its subsidiary. WMF is not developing any search engine, or are planning to do it, let alone in combination with Wikia.

9. Who's in charge of what is written on Wikipedia?
On Wikipedia there is a warning to all the authors: "The civil and criminal liability on what you send to your will without fail, for each change you make, in fact, will be publicly recorded your IP address."
In case of problems related to a Wikipedia entry, please contact the help desk at info-it@wikimedia.org Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Foundation directly (contact details are available on its website). However, it is useless to contact Wikimedia Italy, since as scritto sopra l'associazione non ha alcuna autorità sull'enciclopedia; come azione immediata, può essere più utile contattare singoli utenti del progetto, direttamente su Wikipedia.
